The Milk Look
Taking sartorial cues from ’70s Castro

Inspired by Sean Penn’s performance in Gus Van Sant’s film Milk, I made my maiden voyage to San Francisco. The city has long been synonymous with saucy drag queen attire and hard-core Folsom Street leather gear, but the film’s costume designer, Danny Glicker, hit a home run by faithfully capturing the more pedestrian side of 1970s Frisco fashion, with well-supported flared jeans, tight graphic tees, a liberal dose of leisure suits, printed rayon shirts and wide ties, and oversize eyewear that would be at home on any Olsen twin’s brow. The Milk look, readily available at many of the thrift and vintage stores (around the city but especially in the Mission district), feels fresh and a welcome respite from the endless ’80s replays of skinny jeans and ironic haircuts. For era-appropriate eyewear check out Allyn Scura Eyewear (AllynScura.com), which carries more than 50,000 vintage models. More >>

Style: Great Shapes
The optically challenged have been peering through magnifying lenses for more than 1,000 years. But spectacles as fashion? That's something relatively new, thanks to either Roger Bacon or the Italians—historians are cloudy—who in the mid-13th century decided to mount corrective lenses in frames. Monks loved them. In the 1800s, even people who didn't read for a living were wearing them, and in the next century, with the advent of plastic, "glasses became part of the wardrobe," says Jenny Benjamin, director of the Museum of Vision in San Francisco. Today they come in all shapes and sizes. See which one fits your face. Or your personality.

Private Eyes
If you know your Wayfarers from your Persols, then mustering up the eBay blood, sweat and tears it takes to beat predatoryshopper2006 off those never-been-useds isn't so easy on the pockets. Way way before online bidding wars, Allyn Scura was diligently foraging for vintage specs, and now has a 60,000-strong collection of untouched pieces on her website to show for it. There are cat-eye pink tinteds and wacky multi-colored joints (yes, Elton John is on to them), with some frames dating as far back as the 1800s -- ancient vintage! Scura designs her own collection, but also keeps a secret stash of super rare finds for "special inquiries." Ask nicely enough and you can let those snakeskin-lined, crystal encrusted Emmanuelle Khanhs come find you. www.allynscura.com -Chioma Nnadi

Eye Goggles  Galore: Allyn Scura Eyewear

Allyn Scura and Scott Iseyama invite you to a veritable smorgasbord of antique and vintage eyewear. Wait - scratch that. With an inventory of more than 50,000 pairs ranging from the 18th century to the 1970s, their offerings surpass any Vegas buffet we've ever seen. The difference behind allynscura.com is that virtually all of its eyewear is vintage but never worn. This means you can score Elton John eye goggles at Elton John standards without paying Elton John prices.

These "recycled" glasses are part of Scura and Iseyama's green philosophy -- they use recycled shipping products and the company car is a hybrid. If you can't catch up with these fantastic folks at one of their many shows, co-owner Iseyama, who is also the voice behind their 800 line, takes the mystery out of online ordering by walking you through styles and sizing. As if you need another reason to shop Allyn Scura, for $49 they can fill your plastic wood-grained 1960s Buddy Holly's with any standard prescription.

Some think glasses make people look smart. If that's the case, and glasses exude impressions, then Allyn Scura's funky vintage and antique eyewear can make anyone look hip.

The San Clemente resident has been hawking collections of unused eye frames for 16 years, and regular customers spend long hours scouring the inventory at the Long Beach market.

Scura and her husband, Scott Iseyama, have more than 60,000 unused vintage frames from around the world. Their stock also includes a limited supply of coveted vintage brands, including Christian Dior, Gucci and Valentino.

Most customers buy the frames, which sell for about $20-$200, for prescriptions. Others buy them for sunglasses, but even people who don't want to buy still have fun trying on the array of cool, unusual and funny glasses.

Talent Scout

Stores are like suckers. There's a new one born every minute.

And, like suckers, new stores often fall prey to a basic lack of savvy. It's not enough to stock good merchandise. It's the vibe. The space. The staff.

We found precisely that combination at Scout, the latest addition to the ever changing lineup of Third Street boutiques. Owner Greg Armas has outfitted one of the most user-friendly, stress-free, enjoyable little shopping environments we've seen in a long time: The space is minimal but warm; the merch is a combo of dead stock, vintage, and up-and-comers, like Tiny Armour Jewelry, Allyn Scura Eyewear, and Queen of Plastics.

And then there's Greg, who, at 25, may just be the cutest shop boy, like, ever . Always helpful and painfully honest (as in, he'll actually tell you if he thinks you're buying too much), he's the sort of guy you just can't wait to give your money to.
Which may leave you wondering who the sucker really is.

Online Shopper - Finding the Perfect Fit: A Cat's Eye View

At first glance, my husband does not appear to be an eyeglasses tyrant.

In fact he usually keeps a low profile when it comes to issues of style and design. He dresses in the distracted, slightly rumpled style favored by many men of his generation: khaki pants (often flecked with small bleach stains) and a "dress" shirt purchased from Lands' End in 1988. He never has his hair cut before it becomes wild and starts growling at passersby. And he can toss his windbreaker onto a newly reupholstered couch for days without noticing the wild-animal print fabric. Then suddenly he will ask with suspicion, "Is there something different about this room?" More>>

Made of Steals: Allyn Scura Eyewear

Allynscura.com, a company based in Southern California, is for folks who refuse to give up their summer timeshare fund for a piece of vintage plastic. Until Two years ago, owner Allyn Scura ran a wholesale business in NYC, for which she bought out whole warehouses of defunct eyewear. That's why she can now offer a rhinestone-encrusted, cotton candy-pink pair of cat-eye frames from the 1950s for just $25. A slim pair of square, tortoise-shell reading glasses fetch $50, and an unusual set of round, dual-colored Italian rims circa 1960 still clock in under $100. Scura says that her passion for eyewear began with "a wicked sunglass fetish," a habit that eventually led her to the eclectic designs of vintage specs. "I loved the styles, so I used to pop out the old lenses and replace them with tinted ones," she says. "Once people began stopping me on the street to ask where I had bought them, I realized I'd hit on something big." You'll feel the same at her site's closeout section, where frames can be had for a mere $20 -- a lifetime investment equal to the price of two movie tickets.

Do You See What I See? Focusing on Men's Eyewear

For many men, eyeglasses are little more than a necessity, but for the well-dressed gent, one's choice of eyewear should be more than purely functional. There are plenty of stylish ways to navigate the maddening crowds and read the fine print. While early eyeglass frames initially reflected the strictly utilitarian nature of the optometry pieces they encased, times and trends have influenced eyewear as much as fashion. And it's times and trends that are causing the resurgence of interest in vintage eyewear that we see today. More>>

Vintage Eyewear vs. Vintage Inspired Eyewear (Gizmos and Gadgets)

This whole retro/vintage thing has been running for a while, huh? Well, here is your chance to get a piece of actual vintage fashion history. Pair Up With Vintage Frames

'Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtledoves ... and a partridge in a pear tree.' Nearly everyone knows 'The Twelve Days of Christmas.' Giving the yuletide song a little local flavor, we came up with our own version -- the '12 Days of Christmas, Orange County Style' where we count down the days 'til Christmas. On the seventh day you might get seven swans a swimming, or you might try seven 'pairs' of never worn vintage cat-eye frames from the '50s and '60s - or perhaps antique frames, like the pair used by Adam Sandler in the movie "Big Daddy." You can either order sunglass lenses or have your optometrist fill your prescription. Of course, begging our pardon, "eye-catching" frames are so unique, you might want to keep a few extra on hand. The vintage glasses come from Santa Ana-based Allyn Scura Eyewear - www.allynscura.com or (800) 393-7482. The vintage frames are $20-$150 per pair."
